About Hooked on Phonics
Hooked on Phonics was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Danbury, Connecticut. Its parent company is Sandviks with books distributed through Simon & Schuster.
Hooked on Phonics offers educational materials to help improve reading through the use of phonetics, which is the letter-sound correlation. It was heavily advertised in the 1990’s on TV and radio, aimed specifically towards parents that provide schooling at home. Beginning in 2001, Hooked on Phonics began a new partnership with KinderCare Learning Centers. It was then acquired by Educate, Inc. in 2005, who also operate Sylvan Learning. New product lines were introduced starting in 2006 that included Hooked on Handwriting, Hooked on Spanish and Hooked on Spelling, plus more. It is currently available in over 30 countries.
